Stringing an innocent man up in the middle of a saloon, without a trial, just to prove that he runs the town, makes Governor John Campbell this week #1 bad guy. The AMC television series "Hell On Wheels" added the character this season, played by Jake Weber.
ABOUT THE CHARACTER
A former Brigadier General for the Union Army, John Campbell spearheaded the reconstruction campaign in the South on behalf of the Radical Republicans. He was removed from his post in Atlanta due to his extreme and violent tendencies, and appointed provisional governor of Wyoming by Ulysses S. Grant. Campbell arrives in Cheyenne in the wake of personal and political failure, determined to civilize the West and seize control of the city from railroad mogul Thomas Durant.
ABOUT THE ACTOR
Jake Weber has worked extensively in film, theatre, and television for over 25 years. His film credits include Learning to Drive, Hungry Hearts, White House Down, Dawn of the Dead, Meet Joe Black, U-571, Pushing Tin, The Cell, Dangerous Beauty, The Pelican Brief, A Stranger Among Us, and Wendigo. His first job was in Oliver Stone's Born on the 4th of July.
Weber was a series regular on Mind of the Married Man; American Gothic; Something Wilder, starring Gene Wilder; and Medium, starring Patricia Arquette. He also recently recurred on The Following.
A theatre veteran, Weber has appeared extensively on and off Broadway and regionally at Williamstown Theatre Festival and Arena Stage.
Originally from London, Weber attended Juilliard in New York City; A.S. Neil's Summerhill School in England; Middlebury College in Vermont, where he studied English and Political Science; and The Moscow Art Theatre in the then-Soviet Union.
