Faster than a limping Grandfathered, more powerful than a Truth Be Told, able to leap small Minority Reports in a single bound! CBS's Supergirl came out swinging in its debut on Monday night, wrangling the season's best premiere for a new show. Premiering after The Big Bang Theory, Supergirl drew a total audience of 12.94 million viewers and tallied an impressive 3.2 rating in the 18-to-49 demo, according to Variety. [UPDATE: In final ratings for Monday night, Supergirl's 18-49 rating was adjusted down to a 3.1, tying Blindspot.] That's better than good, that's great!
The stats make Supergirl the best debut for a new show this fall in both measures. The previous highs belonged to Blindspot's 3.1 rating and Life in Pieces' 11.3 million viewers. For the year, Supergirl ranks as the fourth highest-rated premiere behind Fear the Walking Dead (4.5), Empire (3.8), and Better Call Saul (3.4).
Having The Big Bang Theory as a lead-in helped a bunch, as that show drew 15.9 million viewers and a 4.2, its best numbers since the season premiere. And CBS couldn't have picked a better night to go against Monday Night Football as the night's matchup featured the Baltimore Ravens versus the Arizona Cardinals, not exactly big draws in the sport. The real test for Supergirl will come next week, when it anchors Monday nights on its own at 8pm as The Big Bang Theory moves to its regular night on Thursdays.
