'Skyfall' Star Ben Whishaw Cast in BBC Spy Drama

British actor Ben Whishaw (The Hour, Cloud Atlas), who portrayed Q opposite Daniel Craig's James Bond in Skyfall, has been cast in London Spy, an upcoming BBC drama. The 33-year-old, who was last year among those tipped to become the new star of Doctor Who before Peter Capaldi was cast, will play the lead character in the series made by Working Title Television for BBC Two. Five episodes of the hourlong show are scheduled to air next year. Whishaw, considered one of Britain's up-and-coming stars, will play Danny, "a gregarious, hedonistic romantic who gets drawn into the dangerous world of British espionage," according to a show description. "He falls for the anti-social but enigmatic Alex, both from opposite worlds, and they soon realize they’re perfect for each other. But when Alex suddenly disappears, Danny is utterly ill-equipped to take on his complex and codified world."

The show, written by Tom Rob Smith, will start filming next month, with additional casting to be announced soon. Smith’s Child 44 trilogy was an international best-seller and is currently being adapted for the big screen, with Ridley Scott producing.

Said BBC Two controller Janice Hadlow: “Drama on BBC Two has seen an incredible resurgence, and I'm thrilled to be welcoming this gripping new series to the channel, written by an exciting talent."

Whishaw recently also replaced Colin Firth as the voice of Paddington Bear in Paddington.
