Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials Will Become a BBC Series

Philip Pullman's beloved trilogy His Dark Materials is being adapted into a BBC One series, the network announced Tuesday. Pullman will executive-produce the eight-part series with New Line Cinema and Bad Wolf, the production company behind Doctor Who.

His Dark Materials is made up of three books, Northern Lights (also known as The Golden Compass), The Subtle Knife, and The Amber Spyglass. The series follows two children, Lyra Belacqua and Will Parry, who explore parallel universes inhabited by armored polar bears, witches, and daemons, an animal embodiment of a person's inner self.

The story has previously been adapted for radio, stage, and film. It's even been a graphic novel. And while Pullman claims to be happy with how His Dark Materials has been adapted over the years, many fans will be understandably cautious after the disastrous 2007 movie The Golden Compass. Here's hoping the new BBC series will make up for that CGI trash heap.

Are you excited by this news? Will you watch the BBC adaptation?
