Hayley Atwell shares some insight on what Agent Carter season 3 could have included. Originally the love interest for Captain America (Chris Evans) in Captain America: The First Avenger, Peggy (Atwell) got her own spinoff series on ABC in 2015. Marvel’s Agent Carter was set after the events of The First Avenger, and promised fans a look at the earliest days of S.H.I.E.L.D.
Despite strong critical reviews and a devoted fan base, however, Agent Carter was canceled after two seasons due to low ratings. ABC bosses decided to move Atwell to a new show, Conviction, but this series failed to launch, and was also axed (after only 13 episodes). Now, fans are hoping for an Agent Carter revival, and Atwell herself has spoken a little bit about what was originally planned for a third season of the show.
Atwell attended Heroes and Villains Fan Fest this past weekend in London, England, where she spoke about a potential third season of Agent Carter. According to Moviepilot, the actor believes that a third season would have spent more time exploring Peggy’s history and her family relationships. Her brother and her upbringing would have been brought into the spotlight, along with her friendship with Jarvis (James D’Arcy). Atwell also mentioned that her character would have eventually got married, although she doesn’t know who to, and confirms that if a third season was offered, she would leap at the chance to reprise the role.
While most of this is logical enough speculation for where the story was going, Atwell couldn’t confirm the answers to some more specific questions, such as who shot Jack Thompson (Chad Michael Murray). She explained that the show was written one episode at a time, so she was simply not privy to that kind of information about future plans for the story line.
After the cancellation of Conviction, Atwell is currently at something of a loose end, so it’s certainly possible that she and the Agent Carter fans could get their wish and see the show revived for a third season. This is not the first time Atwell has said she would be happy to reprise the role, and fan support recently brought NBC’s Timeless back, so who knows? Atwell has also confirmed that she is no longer interested in playing Doctor Who, as previously rumored, so the time may well be ripe for Peggy’s return.
There are currently no official plans for Agent Carter season 3.
