The veteran actor will play the mysterious and powerful character.
Game of Thrones is bringing in the big gun for Bran's (Isaac Hempstead Wright) upcoming storyline.
Veteran actor Max von Sydow has joined the HBO hit as the mysterious Three-Eyed Raven, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed. The character was last seen in the season four finale, when Bran and his pals met the mysterious and powerful character, played in that episode by Struan Rodger.
That episode set up the Three Eyed Raven as a tutor to Bran, who has developed Warg powers, giving him the ability to inhabit the bodies of animals. Bran's storyline was sidelined for season five, with fans speculating his story will pick up after he has been under the Three Eyed Raven's tutelage for awhile.
Von Sydow's lengthy screen resume dates back to 1949, with him earning Oscar nominations for 1987's Pelle erobreren and 2011's Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close. He's received two Golden Globe nominations, including one for 1973's The Exorcist, in which he played the priest Father Merrin. Other roles include 2002's The Minority Report and the upcoming Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens, which features Game of Thrones' Gwendoline Christie (Brienne of Tarth).
Von Sydow's casting follows that of Deadwood alum Ian McShane, who is playing a mystery role.
Entertainment Weekly first reported the casting news.
