It was way back in 2012 that we first heard of attempts to reboot The Exorcist as a TV drama, before film screenwriter William Peter Blatty denied the rumors. The project surfaced again in 2013 under Fantastic Four writer Jeremy Slater, and at long last, FOX has given an official pilot order to a modern reboot of the iconic horror tale.

Based on Blatty’s 1971 novel, which in turn inspired the 1973 horror film, FOX’s one-hour take on The Exorcist is described as a modern reinvention of the novel, “a propulsive, serialized psychological thriller following two very different men tackling one family’s case of horrifying demonic possession, and confronting the face of true evil.”

Slater also executive produces alongside James Robinson, David Robinson and Barbara Wall. Back in 2012, a previous incarnation had been written by Martha Marcy May Marlene writer and director Sean Durkin, though it remains unclear why production never moved forward.

Well, The Exorcist TV series missed the 40th anniversary window, but will a modern bent bring Jeremy Slater’s new vision to light?
