Doctor Who star Paul McGann to join Holby City

Best known for his role as the eighth Doctor, Paul will be playing Professor John Gaskell ‘a surgical star with irrepressible charm’

Holby City will have more new blood on its wards as former Doctor Who star Paul McGann is set to join the cast, the BBC has confirmed.

Paul, who will begin filming with the team in August, will play Professor John Gaskell, who has been described as ‘a surgical star with irrepressible charm’.

It’s been revealed that Gaskell turns up at a time when Holby is struggling under a crisis. Gaskell arrives as the hero of the house, armed with a host of surgical innovations that are set to take the hospital into an ‘exciting but unknown future’.

In addition to his famous role as the eighth Doctor in Doctor Who, Paul has also featured in Withnail and I, Luther, Jonathan Creek, and reprised his role of the Doctor in the 50th Anniversary celebrations.

Paul said of his new role: “I’m really excited to be joining Holby. Professor John Gaskell is certainly going to be an interesting character and I can’t wait to get started on the wards.”

Oliver Kent, Head of Continuing Drama for BBC Scripted Studios, said: “I am utterly thrilled that the brilliant Paul McGann has agreed to join the cast of Holby City as Professor John Gaskell. I’ve admired Paul’s work for many years on stage, screen and radio and it’s a dream come true that he is joining our company.

“In his hands, John Gaskell will be a mercurial force to be reckoned with and I can’t wait to see him locking horns with Jac, Hanssen, Griffin and the other Holby titans.”

This latest development comes after it was confirmed that former Casualty star Lee Mead would be reprising his role as Ben ‘Lofty’ Chiltern, but this time on the wards of Holby. And Jaye Jacobs will return to Holby as fun-loving nurse Donna Jackson, for the first time since 2011.

Paul is set to appear on screen in Holby from December.
