'Chicago Med' Adds 'Jane the Virgin' Alum as Series Regular

The staff of Chicago Med is growing.

rachel_dipillo_s_15Jane the Virgin alum Rachel DiPillo has joined the new medical drama as a series regular.

DiPillo will play Dr. Reese, an emergency room intern fresh out of medical school. She joins a cast that includes Oliver Platt, S. Epatha MerkersonNick GehlfussYaya DaCostaColin Donnell, Brian Tee and Torrey DeVitto, who signed on for the series Thursday.

The additions of DeVitto and DiPillo come in the wake of Laurie Holden's departure. After appearing in the April backdoor pilot for the spinoff, the second from Chicago Fire, Holden released a statement Wednesday saying she was exiting due to a family commitment.

Like cast mates Donnell and Tee, DiPillo appeared in an NBC pilot this past spring – an adaptation of the BBC Three comedy series Cuckoo – that failed to get a pickup.

The Chicago shows have been known to pull from NBC's failed pilots before. When a large chunk of the original cast from the Chicago P.D. backdoor pilot was replaced in 2013, Sophia Bush, Jesse Lee Soffer and Patrick John Flueger were all plucked from the network's Hatfields & McCoys pilot. Last season, Kara Killmer joined Chicago Fire as a new paramedic shortly after appearing in the NBC drama pilot Tin Man.

Chicago Medis still looking to add one more series regular to its main cast before production begins in September: a female charge nurse.

Dick Wolf, Matt Olmstead, Danielle Gelber, Peter Jankowski, Michael BrandtDerek Haas and Andrew Dettmann will exec produce the series, which hails from Universal Television and Wolf Films.

DiPillo's credits also include Mad Men, Revenge and The Glades. She is repped by Paradigm, Treadwell Entertainment Group and Steve Younger.

Chicago Med premieres on Tuesday, Nov. 17 at 10 p.m. on NBC.
