Arrow Producer Teases Island Flashback in Season 6 Premiere

Arrow fans will have the opportunity to see the last set of flashbacks scenes in the show when it returns from its hiatus and debuts season 6, according to Marc Guggenheim, co-executive producer of the show. Following its season finale last week that finished up the story of Oliver Queen’s lost five years shipwrecked on Lian Yu, it was initially assumed that the series will no longer use flashbacks moving forward. However, it appears that there will be one final use of a flashback sequence in Arrow‘s season 6 premiere.

The CW show’s latest season ended on a huge cliffhanger after Lian Yu exploded, possibly killing everyone in the island including those who are the closest to Oliver. Almost every Arrow fan is itching to know if Team Arrow is alive and well. If not, who among them suffered the worst due to the explosion and what Oliver’s next plan of action will be given the predicament.

Guggenheim recently sat down with Access Hollywood and revealed that they are devising a way to explore more of Lian Yu just before it came apart in the final moments of season 5. “If you take me literally at my word, yes, back to the island,” he said. Unfortunately, the producer has remained mum on any further details regarding what fans could expect from the planned sequence.

The producer, however, is not permanently closing the door on incorporating flashbacks if the narrative calls for it. However, they just would not be as prominent as they were in the last five years of Arrow.

“Last year, when we sort of realized we’re going to go past Season 5, we basically made a collective decision that Season 5 would be the final year of flashbacks. Next year, in Season 6, what we’ll end up doing is we’ll do some episodes without any sort of flashbacks. We’ve [also] established over the first four seasons of proof of concept that we can do flashback stories that don’t involve what I call the island narrative, even when he’s not on the island.”

Based on Guggenheim’s comments, it is possible that the island flashback in the Arrow season 6 premiere will have more to do with what happened while Oliver was watching the island explode in front of him. This could be the show’s way of telling viewers what happened to the members of Team Arrow who were on the shores of Lian Yu.

With Arrow finally tying up all the loose ends from Oliver’s five years stranded on the island, the show is basically heading into foreign territory. But that could be a good thing as it means that the show can open up new stories to tackle, which will offer its fans something new to look out for.

Arrow will return with season 6 in the fall on The CW.
