American Crime Story: Versace Photo Confirms New Title

American Crime Story season 3 has a new title: The Assassination of Gianni Versace. As previously reported, this edition will trace the events leading up to and immediately after the murder of famed designer Gianni Versace, who was shot in 1997 by serial killer Andrew Cunanan. Darren Criss (Glee) and Edgar Ramirez (The Girl On the Train) are set to star as Cunanan and Versace, respectively, while Penelope Cruz will play the late icon’s sister, fellow designer Donatella Versace, and Ricky Martin will portray his longtime partner, Antonio D’Amico.

Season 3 is slated to bow in 2018, following the Katrina-focused season 2, which will premiere at a yet-to-be disclosed date earlier that year. Both come on the heels of the series’ critically acclaimed freshman run, The People v. O.J. Simpson, last February. But while The Assassination of Gianni Versace is still quite far out from its debut, things have already begun to take shape behind scenes.

Executive producer Ryan Murphy, who’s currently directing the first episode of the show, took to Instagram on Friday to share a photo from the set. It featured the already-attached Criss alongside newly added cast member Max Greenfield (New Girl), who previously appeared in Murphy’s American Horror Story: Hotel as ill-fated addict Gabriel. In the caption, Murphy revealed the official title.

Thus far, Murphy has yet to share many details about his approach for the season, though that’s par for the course for the anthology mastermind. He notably kept the entire theme for American Horror Story‘s sixth season under wraps until its premiere episode. Still, those familiar with Murphy’s work can make a few assumptions about what to expect: sharp writing, strong direction, stellar acting.

Without Katrina to compare it to, it’s hard to say if American Crime Story‘s later seasons will be able to keep up its initial momentum. American Horror Story has been hit and miss amongst fans and critics alike, and American Crime Story season 1 will certainly be a tough act to follow. But Murphy has fast become one of the leading forces in television, so viewers should expect Versace to hit the mark. If The People v. O.J. Simpson is any indication, it will be a deft mix of fact and fiction, adding rich, emotional depth to an engrossing tale of true crime.

American Crime Story: Katrina and American Crime Story: The Assassination of Gianni Versace are set for premiere in 2018. American Crime Story season 4 will follow in 2019.
