Almost two months after the Season 1 finale of The Whispers aired, it's quietly going away for good. According to Entertainment Weekly, ABC canceled the science fiction drama, meaning we'll never know what happened to Special Agent Claire Bennigan after she was zapped up into an alien ship and taken away.
The Whispers was originally ordered to series way back in May 2014, but ABC pushed its premiere all the way to the summer of 2015. Given that, it's not surprising that it didn't have the full support of the network behind it when it came to deciding on a second season or not. The ratings didn't help either. The August 31 season (now series) finale drew only 2.75 million people and a 0.7 rating in the 18-to-49 demo in overnight ratings, placing it squarely in last place among the big networks.
In case you forgot, The Whispers starred Lily Rabe as an agent looking into children's bizarre behavior with an imaginary friend named Drill. But Drill turned out to be an alien, who was on Earth to prep kids to be taken away during an alien invasion! Or something. The show was based on Ray Bradbury's short story Zero Hour, and given ABC's luck with Zero Hour, maybe that should have been a sign.
Anyway, R.I.P. to another one of ABC's stabs at science fiction. Say "hi" to FlashForwardfor me.
Will you miss The Whispers? Be honest!
